Facebook Places Goes Live – India Will Have To Wait Yet Again

Facebook Places has launched. What this application allows you to do is check-in your location on Facebook and your friends are updated in real-time. There is nothing novel about the idea considering Gowalla, and Foursquare, provide you the same service. But with the number of Facebook addicts around the globe, this application is sure to be a hit.

Security Features

Facebook has always been in the news for its security, or rather the lack of it. Recently, the social networking giant has had to make many changes to keep users satisfied. Now, with Facebook Places, Facebook has been cautious from the start itself. As a default setting, only friends will be able to see your check-in.

Minors, who have always been a problem for Facebook, are taken special care of by only updating their friends with their check-in, even if they have changed the default setting to “everyone”.

As WATBlog blogger Prateek Waghre likes to put it, every story has 3 sides : The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The Good

There are a lot of good things about such an application. Users will be able to share the places they think are great to visit, or restaurants that serve delicious food. Businesses will be able to post their location which will in turn help potential partners to locate them.

The Bad

Even with all those security measures in place, isn’t it still a breading ground for stalkers? Facebook might have done all that they can in terms of security on Facebook Places, but the user is not always careful. Some accept random requests, while some still have scorned lovers on their list of friends. So do not be surprised to find a “Facebook friend” or an ex pop up in front of you while you are on a vacation.

The Ugly

Well the application is only available for iPhone users in the US. Just like the iPad, India will have to wait yet again. So before all of you Indian Facebook fanatics start to rejoice, the wait has just begun.

What is your take on Facebook Places?
